To keep our Elders, Custodians and future Elders safe, and to align with current requirements, we have postponed in-person workshops. Delivered in partnership with Wollongong City Council, Beyond Empathy, Southern Illawarra AECG and NSW Public Schools, Poetry in First Languages (PIFL) Dharawal deepens cultural connections by having First Nations students come together with Community on Country to celebrate, learn language and Dreaming Stories.
 
During the program, On Country Days bring together First Nations students from Southern Illawarra schools, to connect with local Elders and Custodians. The days focus on learning traditional bush conservation practices, tasting bush medicine and tucker, creating art and connecting to the earth through movement workshops.
 
A series of PIFL workshops follow to connect students with Custodians, Elders and poets to learn language, create and publish poetry about identity, the earth, culture and broader issues facing First Nations communities.
 
Poems will be published on the Red Room Poetry website, performed in community events, as well as recorded in partnership with Beyond Empathy.
