A Gift

A gift from my dad
A simple gift to keep me glad
A precious sentimental gift
My spirits it did lift
In a form of a stone
Much more precious than any phone
A simple gift of a stone and string
Not just a forgotten, insignificant thing
A gift that can make everything clear
A gift to make the distance between us disappear.
A green stone carved with care
And the cord without a tear
A necklace from his birth place
It shall always sit beneath my face.
Like he was always there beside me
A trusting charm to guide me.
It was as if I had an item of my culture around my neck
A priceless piece of the past that I could not afford to wreck
A rare item from the south island
An object my ancestors praised as grand
