The hammering rain drenched the lands,

The deluge caused the river to expand.

A sudden surge of water flowed quickly by,

A never-ending downpour from the sky.

Rapidly rising waters causing damage to the banks,

The delicately built nest of the magpie quickly sank.

Spiders scurrying up the hill evacuate their home,

The dreadful damage done, destroying the biome.

Trying to fly to safety, waterlogged wings getting no air,

The kookaburra called to his mates and cried out in despair.

The farmer’s cows head for higher, dryer ground,

Lost, stranded and forgotten, hoping to be found.

Cold, wet and all alone, the joey was in danger,

His mum was gone, his pouch no more, now scooped up by a stranger.

Taken by a human somewhere he’s never been before,

Injured and frightened, his old life was no more.

The rain has finally stopped, but the flood waters still flow,

Habitats destroyed and wildlife with no place to go.

Their homes washed away, burrows beneath the tide,

The soggy ground a muddy mess, the toll is hard to hide.
