Among pavement's grip, you stand

Gum tree, protector of the street,

Roots yearning for leafy halls

Where birds wave their calls

Once free, now trapped in black embrace

Your leaves, like memories, flutter

A cart horse, broken, head hung low

Melancholy etched in your bark’s furrow

Oh, fellow citizens, what have we done?

Stripped nature's grace, paved our way

Let your silent pleas echo still.

“Let me sway in the breeze once more”

In pavment’s shadows, you endure

A testament to last and lose, oh gum tree

Whisper your ancient tales, and we’ll listen, hearts softened by remorse.
