Our Wishing Tree

There was a tree when we were young
That stood by the street
We would scamper to the park each day
To be with the wishing tree.
Our tree,
Our secret.
Our laughter melded into the wind
Our feet left sunken footprints of glee
Our eyes were shining beacons of bliss
When we were near the wishing tree.
Our tree,
Our secret.
The willows were our shield, from the cruel outside world
Its draping branches tickled our cheeks
While peace settled in
As calm as the last breathe of a dying woman.
Our tree,
Our secret.
As time passed by we grew distant from our tree
We were two girls who loved our sanctuary
But now we’ve gone our separate ways
And moved on from our child’s play.
There was a tree when we were young
That stood by the street.
Our tree,
Our secret,
Our haven.
