Over the Years

I remember when we used to look out for each other, providing and protecting one another.
I remember when you used to stare at the horizon,
To see the sun's rays dancing on the water like petals scattering in the wind.
I remember when you used to stop and listen in awe,
To the harmony of birds' song, whispering love to everyone around them.
I remember the feel of your footsteps across the land, as gentle as a mother's hug.
I remember the smiles on your faces,
As you tasted the water of the streams fresh as the early morning chill.
I remember the smell of your campfires, as you sat around and told stories of my creation.
Now it seems they don’t need me anymore,
They make decisions without thinking of me.
I see plastic bags in the rivers,
Suffocating the fish like quicksand.
I hear construction going on,
So loud, like a jet engine, it scares away the birds.
I feel concrete being poured over me,
A heavy weight that can’t be moved.
I can taste the chemicals soaking into my skin like poison running through my veins.
I smell the moldy, polluted air,
It feels like being in a hole with no way out.
