Sarcophilus Harrisii or Palawa Kani

You see it
But then it’s gone
You hear it,
But it’s not there
You feel it,
And then it bites.
The savage crunch of bone on teeth,
The savage scratch of claw on hoof.
It stalks its prey,
waiting for the moment.
And then,
it pounces.
It’s the police officer of the forests,
Keeping European animals out.
Rabbits,
To the stomach.
Donkeys,
To the crows
And itself. To the history books.
As the extinct animal. Forgotten and dead.
