I started off as a soldier, as lean as a pea,
Then after all the training, disqualification came to be,
Only the best of the best would go and join the fight,
And we'd think about it all and every night.
Should I be happy or sad,
I know the couches are glad,
I realised I got into the war
After obviously after hitting the floor.
When you wake up in the morning or stay up nights on end,
Know that your sister is here till the very end,
When you gather your equipment and grab your gun,
Remember you’re loved by your wife and your mum.
Blood starts dripping from the soldier's wound,
It creeps like sewage beneath the hospital room,
The t-shirts that they're wearing, the white fades to red,
And the freedom we're fighting for seems to be dead.
After fighting tireless and unending days,
The cows in the fields would no longer graze,
Their carcasses would just lie on the ground,
And the flies all around it made the only sound.
“We won, we won,” they loudly shouted,
And for a moment I slightly doubted,
Then I realised we actually had won,
Our work here was finally done.
I need to leave now, let’s get home fast,
Finally, I’ve settled in at last,
I wake to the sound of bullets zooming past my ear,
I never realised before, the war is always near.
I closed that diary, later that day,
Not knowing that my mother would say,
Your great-great-grandfather was a hero,
And the effort he gave was never zero.
