The Necklace

The thick, round black glass frame on the pendant
Outlining the gold paint stripe in the middle
On a red background
The black string fraying in my hands
The length adjusters are simply 2 knobs of string
Attached to either end of the necklace
Found in the slightly stuffy, tropical air
Of the Noumea market
Holding the memory of that family trip
Keeping the feel of the warm air
How I’ve had you for so long
Nearly 5 years
Remembering asking Mum for money
To pay for you
Waiting for the seller to pass me the necklace
Waiting to put you around my neck
Remembering the moment we got off the ship
And when we got back on to go home
As I hold the heavy lucky charm necklace
Carefully in my hands
