The Prized Possession

Suspended in time, frozen in musty darkness
Waiting for someone to claim me.
Dark beady eyes peer at seams of light, slicing through shadows.
The heavens open up, light floods in
Knowing brown eyes peer down, searching for the one.
My ears awaken at the sound of voices,
A child’s face in wonderment at the treasures before him.
A gentle hand raises me up, brushing at my cold fur
Wait, don’t put me aside, I want to be chosen!
Timid fingers point at me, I quiver in anticipation
Warmth enfolds me, held gently in his arms
I come alive, love courses though me
Clinging haphazardly to him as he clambers down the mossy steps,
Jolting and jiggling, he dashes to his family
Triumphantly raised above his head
I gaze around in awe at my new world.
Carefully seated on his lap, my throne,
I close my eyes in content as he strokes me lovingly.
It is bedtime, he presents me my domain
I survey soft cotton rolling lands and nod my approval.
He tucks me under the warm covers, sweet breath upon my ear
Darkness fills my vision; I am suffused with joy.
