They Spoke to Me

As I walk through the great bush, my steps all boom like thunder.
I spot a happy gumtree, a tree that I sit under.
I run my fingers up the trunk. It is smooth and strong, yet meek.
Then suddenly, to my surprise, the tree begins to speak!
At first, the voice is very soft, the rustle of the leaves.
But the wind picks up and the tree yells out in a way I can’t believe.
“Hear me, fear me, listen to me as I now start to roar.
You have hurt me, scared me, now I’ll take back my power, so you cannot ignore.
People burn the earth my roots sit in, for one more moment on a device.
I have watched you kill the forests and slowly melt away the ice.
I was afraid for far too long, but I should scream out for every tree.
Just try to help us, and we will help you, or at least leave you be!”
