The little girl laughs
Wires wings standing to attention,
Ready to take flight.
Gathered pink whirlwind of tulle and ribbon,
Glitter quivers on the netting,
A sparkle that could convince anyone
For a moment,
Just one,
Magic was real.
Laughter takes away worry
A child in blissful innocence
And she believes, with a flick of her wand,
All her dreams will come true.
Now it lies in a dark closet corner
Fabric crumpled, wilted wings
Abandoned, but never forgotten
She doesn’t dream of being a fairy anymore
Instead she’s filled with clouded thoughts
Of the next test, the next speech
Her mind has gone to big things,
More important things
Like growing up
And a real life.
Isn’t it sad to think:
The little girl who discovered that magic wasn’t real?
